Well

A vertical manmade hole dug to draw up groundwater from where it flows underground. Dug by hand or machine, there are two basic kinds of well, the kind that uses the water that seeps through the bottom layer (dug or drilled well, in Japanese kaisei (開井)), and the kind that uses a pipe mechanically driven into the ground、in which case the water used is that which seeps into the pipe from the water table (a driven well, Japanese kansei (管井)). In addition, wells are classified and named according to their method of construction, the position of the water source used, and the depth of the well.
